LORENA LEVI
Self-described narrative portrait painter, Lorena Levi depicts scenes imbued with tension as unspoken conflicts take place between subjects. Borrowing moments from strangers met on chatrooms, Reddit and couples therapy podcasts the artist focuses on uncomfortable moments in domestic settings, the intimate nature of which allows vulnerability for some of the ugliest arguments. Developing the people in her scenes, Levi builds from a mix of dreams, imagination, and memory before expanding the suggestion of the space around them, the living room, the car, and the therapist’s office. Levi’s use of wood panels and thin oil paint creates the soft muted tones of her paintings as wide, open spaces of exposed wood grain leave room for the viewer’s entrance.
