EMMA STONE-JOHNSON

Emma Stone-Johnson b. 1982, lives and works in Brighton, UK. Stone-Johnson’s works are reactive to her environment, reflecting the surrounding colours and forms. In a science-like experiment, Stone-Johnson plays with pigments and surfaces to create her abstract paintings. A loose sketchbook is formed by discarded works as the artist chases marks that appear as if by surprise, building in layers until a painting becomes animated. For Stone-Johnson this moment is like a ‘wonky’ ariel on an analogue television warping the image and replacing it with ‘a psychedelic snowstorm’. The peripheries of the canvas become an important site, loosely framing the work with a tighter use of colour. Containing the paintings that fizz within its boundaries, appearing as if they would never stop expanding without it.
