BARRY REIGATE

Barry Reigate joined us on the project in February 2022. Reigate’s monsters are about fun, they have a mischievous energy, like they might slink out of the canvas and wreak havoc when no one is watching. Returning to a youthful mindset through the work the artist expresses a yearning for things to be as simple as monsters. Everyone has monsters and at a time where it’s hard to tell what’s real and what’s fake, it’s easier to have faith in your own monsters. Kept safely in the confines of their canvas world, Reigate’s monsters are nomads, wandering in a liminal space, made up of over-spilled information from the artist’s sub-conscious.

Beginning his work with a quick automatic drawing process, the monsters are fleshed out with airbrush on canvas. The artist employs a range of mark making skills and ‘tricks’ that form the illusionary quality of the works. During his time on the residency, he experimented with various ways of bringing colour into the work, which can be seen in the acidic underlayer of Untitled (monster ≠10), 2022 and Untitled (monster ≠9), 2022.
